Every oil consists of a unique combination of specific fatty acids, each contributing distinct qualities to your soap batch.

Designing Your Recipe Balance

A well-balanced cold process soap recipe typically targets a harmonious ratio between hard/cleansing fats (Lauric, Myristic, Palmitic, Stearic) and soft/moisturizing fats (Oleic, Linoleic). Mastering these percentages allows soap artisans to formulate custom bars tailored for specific skin types, from deeply cleansing facial bars to highly moisturizing body soaps.

Key Fatty Acids in Soap Formulation

Lauric Acid: Creates a hard bar of soap with quick-cleansing properties and large, fluffy bubbles. Commonly found in high concentrations in coconut oil and palm kernel oil.
Myristic Acid: Similar to lauric acid, it adds hardness and produces rich, voluminous lather while increasing cleansing power. Prominent in coconut oil and nutmeg butter.
Palmitic Acid: Provides structural hardness and creates a stable, creamy lather. Commonly sourced from palm oil, tallow, and cocoa butter.
Stearic Acid: Produces an extremely hard bar with dense, velvet-like lather. Widely present in plant butters like shea and mango, as well as animal fats.
Oleic Acid: A monounsaturated fat that adds exceptional conditioning and moisturizing qualities to the bar, yielding a gentle lather. Found heavily in olive oil, sweet almond oil, and avocado oil.
Linoleic & Linolenic Acids: Polyunsaturated fats that offer soft skin-conditioning properties. Highly susceptible to oxidation (which can cause Dreaded Orange Spots or “DOS”), so they are typically kept to a smaller percentage of the total recipe.
