A wide variety of oils can be used in soap making. For an oil to be saponifiable, it must contain triglycerides (fatty acids). Synthetic options like mineral oil or motor oil are petroleum-based and will not undergo saponification. Below is a categorized breakdown of natural saponifiable oils based on their sources and physical properties.
Liquid Vegetable Oils (Liquid at Room Temperature)
These oils add softness, moisture, and skin-nourishing properties to your soap formulation.
Olive Oil (Olea europaea): The primary ingredient in traditional Castile and Marseille soaps. It moisturizes the skin and cures into a gentle, highly durable bar.
Sunflower Oil: Enhances lather quality and softens the skin; using it in very high percentages can result in a softer bar.
Canola Oil: A budget-friendly moisturizing oil that provides a balanced, smooth texture.
Soybean Oil: Adds a creamy feel to the soap lather, typically combined with harder oils for structural balance.
